I waved to the guy in the restaurant who poked his head out the back door as soon as I arrived. That seemed to satisfy him, so I commenced my search, and found the cache shortly in the logical spot. I'm glad I didn't read the hint first; it would have thrown me off. SMILIE TFTC.
